How to improve your work-life balance as a RACHP professional

From sourcing new customers to chasing invoices, we know it’s all too easy for work to stack up and bleed into your personal life in the RACHP industry. But maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for your wellbeing, and your business.

At TF Solutions, we want to be a helpful guide, partner, and extension of your business, so we’ve provided this short blog on managing your wellbeing and workload as a RACHP professional, suggesting five key ways you can reclaim time for yourself.

Our top tips for managing your wellbeing and workload in RACHP

Organising your workload efficiently stops you from becoming swamped while juggling multiple jobs, especially if you’re a sole trader or working within a small team of specialist installers.

These are a handful of ways you can start to get the balance right, and prioritise your wellbeing at work.

Build a support network

We know running your own business or working alone can be isolating. The camaraderie of a larger team helps work feel less like work – and without that, it’s hard to know where to turn for support and advice.

You might struggle with saying yes to too much work for fear of what you’ll do in quieter months, or be unsure how to secure repeat business and handle your finances.

For that reason, taking the time to develop a support network is essential. Attending industry events allows you to meet and learn from other RACHP professionals, and connect with like-minded people. The Institute of Refrigeration’s list of networking events and community groups is a good starting point.

You could become a member of a formal organisation through the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry Board, or if you’re looking for something less structured, join a social media group, with prominent RACHP networks on Facebook and LinkedIn to help you find the support you need.

Support from your merchant partner

And, of course, you can rely on us for support whenever you need it. Our friendly team is always available for a chat, and may be able to help resolve stressful situations that you’re dealing with.

When you work with TF Solutions, from conception to commissioning and throughout the product lifespan, we provide hands-on industry advice and support from experts with years of experience. If you’ve got a question about how we can work together, drop us a line or give us a call. And if you just want to pop in and get to know your local team, you can find your nearest branch here.

Plan your time carefully

Prioritising your weekly tasks ensures you don’t spend too long on smaller, less important jobs – and gives you more time to spend on your own interests or with loved ones.

Use the tools at your disposal to free up your time. For example, project management software like Trello and ClickUp, which both offer free plans, are great for ensuring you stick to a set routine.

And why not see how AI can help you? AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini make it easier to:

  • Automate regular emails and simple customer interactions online
  • Design a schedule for placing orders or doing tax returns
  • Digest the latest regulation changes (though this must be double-checked – we can sense check anything regulatory related, and advise on legislative changes)

Get smart with admin

Don’t let admin take over your evenings. Either by delegating or relying on new software, you can free up hours that would otherwise be spent behind a desk.

When you hire competent people you trust, you can offload tasks like parts inventory, filing paperwork, and generating documents like inspection checklists. Alternatively, taking advantage of a field service management software like Jobber could also be useful for automating and streamlining many administrative tasks, including invoicing.

Prioritise a work-life balance

Did you know that over 50% of tradespeople experience work-related stresses at least once a week? The most common cause of stress is the long, unpredictable hours, and more than a third said that a poor work-life balance contributes to this.

To help reduce your stress, you could make sure you don’t work past a set hour each day, or even just schedule time where you don’t respond to work calls or emails.

Doing this will help lower the chances of stress building up and leading to burnout, which can have serious consequences for your life and relationships outside of work.

If you’re struggling, reach out to someone you trust

We know there’s a stigma around talking about how we’re really doing, especially in male-dominated industries like RACHP. A recent survey of construction sole traders and small to medium-sized enterprises showed that almost half of the respondents found talking about their mental health extremely difficult, and 70% agreed that the stigma around mental health prevents people from talking about it.

One of the best things you can do for your business and for yourself is look after your health. In our line of work, physical health considerations have historically been put first, but your emotional wellbeing is just as important – and when you’re feeling overwhelmed, turning to a trusted friend can help lessen the burden.

The Working Minds campaign suggests you follow the five R’s to start having meaningful conversations about stress at work:

  • Reach out and have conversations
  • Recognise the signs and causes of stress
  • Respond to any risks you’ve identified
  • Reflect on actions you’ve agreed and taken
  • Make it Routine to check in on how people are feeling and coping

Grabbing a coffee and sharing your anxieties or worries can be a huge relief, and encourage more open conversation in the future.

If you’re struggling and need extra support, help is available. You can call the Construction Industry Helpline on 0345 605 1956 for advice on a range of matters, including occupational health and wellbeing, stress, or financial and personal relationship troubles – they can even provide emergency financial aid. Our charity partner as part of the Travis Perkins Group, Lighthouse, as well as Mates in Mind, are charities that also provide dedicated mental health support for construction workers and workers in related industries.

Your wellbeing always comes first – we hope you’re able to use some of our advice to help improve your work-life balance, and prioritise your health. And, of course, you’re always welcome to pop into one of our branches – our teams will be happy to have a friendly chat whenever you need!
